My kids adore Christmas so much. Even though they’re half-Jewish, they can’t get enough of Christmas. I’m sure yours are the same (unless you don’t celebrate it). Here’s why I’ve decided to let my kids celebrate Christmas all year long.

Yesterday the little one insisted on wearing this pajama getup. It wasn’t that he just wanted to wear the Santa pajamas necessarily – he wanted the Santa bottoms and the moose top. There was something in me that wanted to insist that if he was going to wear the Santa bottoms, he should also wear the Santa top and then I decided to embrace the spirit of Christmas and give him what he wanted. And then I couldn’t stop smiling every single time I looked at him the rest of the day. #MomWin
My oldest loves the song “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” He can’t get enough of it and he doesn’t care what time of year it is. If I let him play it, he’ll then run to the iPad as it’s ending and put it on again and again and again. Argh! My ears! But then inevitably we end up all singing it as loud as we can and dancing around the kitchen with spatulas in our hands (I don’t know why but the boys always go for the kitchen implements) and guess what, I get to drop “Get stuff done” mom for a bit and be “Fun mom.” I need to do that more often. Okay fine, put on Santa Claus is Coming To Town (or the damn Gummy Bear Song) again and let’s do this thing!
The kids would have us keep the tree up in our living room all year long and ya know what, I wouldn’t be totally against this if we had a fake one because I do find in incredibly relaxing and joyful to look at the Christmas tree. But my husband would shut me down anyway – not because he’s Jewish but because he likes thing, ahem, in order. But I can still let the kids have what they love most about the tree – and that’s the lights. Yep, we’re those people whose house you drive by and they still have twinkle lights going on the front porch even though it’s July. And damn proud of it.
I’m not going to get into the spiritual aspects of Christmas because I believe to each their own in that respect but if you’re particularly spiritual, there are clearly lessons from Christmas to be taught to the children all year long. Beyond the religious part – giving, doing for others, peace on earth. Anything that helps my kids balance all the receiving they do all the time with giving is a win in my book.
Here’s what might be the most awesome reason of all to let your kids celebrate Christmas all year long. The fun of the holidays WITHOUT THE PRESENT BUYING. Seriously, imagine how much more you’d enjoy the holidays if you just danced around to Christmas music, wore Santa jammies and looked at twinkly lights all the time instead of rushing around trying to find gifts for every friggin’ person on the planet down to your postman? YES! That would be the best Christmas of all – all year long.
